On May 24, 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 students and two teachers in one of the deadliest school shootings in history. the United States. The shooting has led to renewed calls for gun control and mental health care to address the epidemic of gun violence in the United States.

Fiore, who currently sits on the Las Vegas City Council, however, blamed the shooting on health care for transgender people and secured the Republican nomination to become the next state treasurer.

Projects AP Fiore won the race after racking up more than double the number of votes as opponent Emanuel Kess with 65% of the votes counted. At the time of writing, Fiore had 71,434 votes (61% of the vote) against Kess with only 34,531 (30% of the vote).

During a speech at a June 5 campaign event, Fiore sought to dismiss calls for tougher gun controls, instead blaming the shootings on health care for transgender people, repeating a baseless claim circulated in far-right circles online.

Following the shooting, she said the government should “ban pharmaceutical companies” that provide gender-affirming health care to the transgender community, including hormone therapy.

“You know what we have to ban? We have to ban the pharmaceutical companies that are giving these individuals mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs,” she said, claiming the shooter was taking drugs that would harm his mental state, an allegation that has not been confirmed. by no evidence.

She added that he was taking “a lot of different drugs from transgender, so his mind was pretty flawed.”

There is no evidence that Ramos was transgender. In addition, studies have shown that the transition does not cause a “defective” mental state. In fact, a 2020 study by The American Journal of Psychiatry found that transition was associated “with a decrease in mental health treatment over time.”

Rumors about Ramos began after several tweets included photos claiming to show Ramos wearing women’s clothes, but a Newsweek The fact check previously revealed that “none of the photos were of Ramos or verifiable like him.”

Yet the claims were echoed by several prominent conservative figures, including Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, who described Ramos as a “transgender leftist illegal alien” in a tweet that was deleted after about two hours. . A Reddit user even claimed that some of the photos released were actually photos of them, not Ramos.
